Davao City hosted its 1st Davao History Conference on November 28, 2024 at Finster Hall, Ateneo de Davao University. With the theme “Ang Matatag na Dabawenyo, Kasaysayan ay Kabisado” the event brought together historians, educators, tour guides and cultural advocates to spotlight the rich history and vibrant identity of the city.
Among the notable attendees were City Councilor Pilar C. Braga (chair of the Davao City Council Committee on Education), Dr. Reynante A. Solitario (Schools Division Superintendent of DepEd Davao), Dr. Neil Martial R. Santillan (head of the National Committee on Historical Research under the National Commission for Culture and Arts), Sir Jonathan Engbino (Guide Davao) and historian and author Sir Antonio Figueroa (Institute of Davao Studies). Also, represented by Ms. Amelia S. Lacerna (Education Program Supervisor, DepEd Davao-Araling Panlipunan/Social Sciences). They shared valuable insights on the importance of teaching local history, preserving Davaoβs culture, and uncovering untold stories that transcend colonial narratives.
The discussions celebrated the essence of Davao’s socio-economic history, offering attendees a deeper understanding of the cityβs past and its influence on the present. From exploring unique cultural identities to recognizing the resilience of Dabawenyos, the conference emphasized the importance of connecting with and promoting Davaoβs heritage.
