In the 1950s, a young widow named Abundia del Puerto Vda. De Raakin, known as “Abon,” began her confectionery journey in her modest kitchen in Cagayan de Oro City. With just six cans of condensed milk, simmered slowly and stirred with care, she crafted a delectable treat known as “pastillas de leche.”

Facing the responsibility of raising six children alone, Abon sold her exquisitely wrapped sweets door-to-door to government employees. Accompanied often by her grandson Roberto, she tirelessly traversed from one office to another.

An unforgettable moment arose when a close friend suggested adding durian, the abundant fruit of Davao, as a flavor. Embracing the idea, Abon created the “durian yema,” an artfully wrapped delight in “papel de hapon.”

Abon and her daughter Melor formed a strong duo. They improved quality, packaging, and registered the business as “Lola Abon’s Durian Candies.” paying homage to Abon, and was recognized by the National Cottage Industries and Development Authority.

After Abon’s passing in 1967, her daughter Melor took charge, expanding the business’s reach nationwide. The durian candies diversified in size and shape—cubes, sticks, and bars—gaining popularity.

In 1990, Melor, facing health and financial challenges, considered selling. Eldest son Roberto intervened, investing and having younger sister Dolores manage. They quickly paid off debts, reviving the business.

By 2000, Lola Abon’s was incorporated, solidifying its legacy. The family received awards like Gawad Negosyanteng Pinoy (1999) and Most Outstanding SME (2005).

Today, Lola Abon’s stands as one of the leading durian candy manufacturers in the Philippines, epitomizing a remarkable journey from a humble kitchen to sweet national success.
